Amazon S3 Tables adds support for Apache Iceberg V3

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced full native support for the Apache Iceberg V3 data specification within Amazon S3 Tables. This update allows data engineers to utilize advanced data types, including geometry, geography, unknown, and nanosecond-precision timestamps, directly within the storage layer.

By supporting these types natively, users can avoid the performance overhead of encoding geospatial coordinates or high-precision event times as strings or integers. The V3 specification also introduces binary deletion vectors, which improve efficiency during compliance-related deletions by writing single compact files rather than numerous small delete files. This architectural shift is designed to reduce infrastructure friction and maintenance cycles in petabyte-scale analytics workloads.

Additionally, the update includes support for column default values, which can populate new columns for existing rows without requiring a manual backfill. S3 Tables continue to provide automatic maintenance and compaction to ensure performance and cost-effectiveness as datasets scale.
