Amazon secures record C$14 bn Canadian bond issuance for AI spending

Amazon.com Inc. sold C$14 billion of investment‑grade bonds in Canadian dollars on June 8, the largest corporate debt offering ever in the currency. The five‑part deal, with maturities ranging from three to 30 years, attracted over C$28 billion of orders, surpassing Alphabet’s previous Canadian record.

The proceeds are earmarked for general corporate purposes, including funding Amazon’s aggressive AI infrastructure build‑out, capital expenditures for data centres and chips, and repayment of existing debt. JPMorgan Chase, Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Nova Scotia and Toronto‑Dominion Bank acted as lead managers.

This issuance is part of a broader multi‑currency debt tour that has seen Amazon raise more than $70 billion since early 2025, adding US‑dollar, euro and Swiss‑franc offerings. Analysts note that the scale of AI‑related capex—projected at about $200 billion this year—has pushed hyperscalers to borrow heavily despite strong cash flows.
