US Stock Market Ends July with Amazon Surge and Apple Drop

U.S. equities closed July with mixed performance. The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 276 points (0.5%), and the Nasdaq composite gained 1% after briefly losing an early 1.3% jump.

Amazon.com Inc. led the rally, jumping 15.3% after reporting quarterly profit that more than tripled year‑over‑year, driven by cloud growth, and raising its investment spending outlook. Microsoft also posted a strong gain the day before on similar AI‑related expectations.

Apple Inc. fell 7.4% despite posting higher profit, as its revenue‑growth forecast for the current quarter missed expectations, which executives blamed on a component shortage linked to the AI boom. Chip‑maker stocks were volatile; Micron Technology swung from a 6.4% rise to a 5.9% decline.

Higher oil prices, spurred by the war with Iran, lifted Brent crude to $87.93 a barrel, adding inflation concerns. Overall, the S&P 500 finished the month with a small loss, ending at 7,489.72 points; the Dow at 52,485.03; and the Nasdaq at 25,373.85.
