Amazon is significantly expanding its Prime Air drone delivery service, aiming to reach nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of the year. This expansion would increase the company's current coverage by approximately six times, targeting roughly 30 million customers. The service is designed to deliver small, lightweight packages weighing up to 5 pounds (2.3 kg) in as little as 30 minutes.

While the expansion promises increased speed and efficiency, recent incidents have highlighted technical and operational challenges. In Texas, a customer reported a drone dropping a package directly into her swimming pool. Other reported issues include packages being dropped into ponds or onto concrete, resulting in damage. Additionally, some residents have expressed concerns regarding the noise levels produced by the drones.

Amazon plans to focus deployment in suburban areas to avoid the complexities of high-rise buildings and major airports. The service is currently operational in several states, including Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas, with upcoming expansions planned for metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Atlanta, and Cleveland.
