Amazon Web Services pledges $1 billion for U.S. data center communities

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the ‘Built Together’ program, a commitment to invest over $1 billion into U.S. communities hosting its data centers over the next five years. The initiative aims to address local concerns regarding the environmental and economic impacts of the massive infrastructure required for artificial intelligence.

The investment will focus on three primary areas: education and workforce development, energy affordability, and water conservation. Key components include providing free community college tuition for approximately 300,000 students, expanding a network of modular training centers to 25 sites by 2028, and providing energy efficiency grants for 30,000 residences and 300 public buildings. AWS also pledged to become water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than it consumes.

AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the urgency of data center expansion for national security and economic leadership in AI, noting that over 100 data center moratoriums are currently being considered across the United States. To increase transparency, Amazon stated it will no longer use nondisclosure agreements with government agencies regarding its projects and will publish annual reports on its energy and water consumption.
