Amazon to invest $1.9 billion in delivery safety and driver pay
Amazon has announced a $1.9 billion investment in its Delivery Service Partner (DSP) program for 2027. This funding is intended to help increase the national average pay for delivery associates to nearly $24 per hour. The company noted that previous investments have already contributed to a 16% nationwide increase in driver pay over the last three years.
In addition to wage increases, Amazon is prioritizing safety through technological advancements. The company reported a 23% decrease in serious vehicle crashes following previous safety investments. New initiatives include the introduction of AI-powered Smart Delivery Glasses, which allow drivers to scan packages, view walking directions, and receive pet alerts hands-free.
Further safety measures include the deployment of surround-view cameras designed to identify pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. Amazon plans to install this technology in 50% of its Rivian electric delivery vehicles by the end of the year. The company is also updating its delivery app with dynamic hazard alerts to provide real-time notifications regarding road closures, accidents, and construction.
