Amazon trims staff in Artificial General Intelligence unit

Amazon announced layoffs in parts of its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organization on July 22, 2026. The company did not disclose how many positions were eliminated, but the cuts affect teams under Vice President Adeeb Shanaa (AGI data services) and Vice President Vishal Sharma (AGI information). The move follows a broader round of about 16,000 job cuts across the company in January and coincides with recent leadership exits – Rohit Prasad left at the end of 2025 and AGI Lab head David Luan departed in February 2026. Amazon has consolidated AGI work under senior vice‑president Peter DeSantis, who also oversees silicon development and quantum computing.

Amazon said it is “sharpening its focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts,” and will continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure, planning $200 billion of capital expenditure on data centers, chips and related technology in 2026. Affected U.S. employees will receive 90 days of pay and benefits along with severance and transitional health coverage.
