Amazon Web Services and PPC partner for major Greek data center project

Greece is positioning itself as a regional digital hub for Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean through significant investments in data center infrastructure. A major project involves a partnership between Public Power Corporation (PPC/DEI) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to establish a data center in Agios Dimitrios, Kozani. This initial phase features a 300 MW capacity with the potential to expand up to 1 GW, representing an initial investment of 1.2 billion euros.

A study by PwC highlights that while investment interest is high—estimated between 1.4 and 2.2 GW—the availability of electrical capacity is a critical challenge. While Attica attracts 65% of investment interest due to existing telecommunications infrastructure, it ranks low in electrical space availability for the long term. In contrast, regions such as Western Macedonia, Thessaly, Central Macedonia, and Central Greece offer greater energy margins.

In Western Macedonia, the transition from lignite-based energy to new models is being supported by water resources and pumped-storage projects, such as those under environmental review in Ilarionas, to meet the high energy demands of AI-driven computing and renewable energy storage.
