Amazon wildfires prompt emergency calls and air quality warnings in Manaus

Actor Ary Fontoura has used social media to demand emergency action against the intensifying wildfires in the Amazon. During the critical September period of severe drought, Fontoura warned of the scale of the heat spots, stating, “It is catching fire. Let's go, people,” and argued that the Northern region requires faster responses from public authorities.

The environmental crisis has significantly impacted air quality in Manaus, where dense smoke has led monitoring stations to classify the air quality as “terrible,” prompting recommendations for residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.

In response to the advancing fires, the Government of Amazonas has ordered the reinforcement of firefighting teams and firefighters in the state's interior to prevent flames from reaching preserved forest areas, a risk heightened by high temperatures and dry conditions.
