Amazonas Electoral Court imposes new 2026 campaign restrictions

On 4 April, the Regional Electoral Court of Amazonas (TRE‑AM) activated a set of restrictions for Brazil’s 2026 elections. The rules bar the appointment, hiring, dismissal, transfer or removal of public servants until elected officials assume office, with limited legal exceptions. Voluntary transfers of resources between federative entities are prohibited except where authorized by law. Institutional publicity of public actions, programs, works or campaigns is banned unless a serious and urgent public need is recognised by the Electoral Justice, and official statements on radio or television face new limits. Public agencies must cleanse websites and official channels of content that could be seen as personal promotion of candidates or incumbent authorities, and the use of public funds for artistic shows at inauguration events is forbidden. Violations can lead to fines, cancellation of registration or diplomas, and other electoral sanctions.

In parallel, TRE‑AM released a free “Propaganda Guide for the 2026 Elections,” aimed at parties, federations and candidates. The guide, produced by the Court’s Committee to Combat Disinformation, explains permissible and prohibited campaign conduct, registration procedures and accounting rules, seeking to reduce infractions through early education.
