Amazonas faces extreme heat and drought alerts

The state of Amazonas is facing severe environmental challenges due to extreme heat and a significant drought. The Amazonas State Health Secretariat (SES-AM) and FVS-RCP have issued a technical alert regarding the health risks posed by extreme temperatures and dry air, which are linked to the current climate emergency.

Simultaneously, the Amazonas Civil Defense has declared an alert for 15 municipalities, primarily in the southern region, due to the dry season. In Humaitá, an emergency has been declared following the Madeira River dropping to 12.49 meters. In Envira, residents report that goods previously transported by river must now be moved by road, though poor road conditions are causing logistical difficulties.

To mitigate the impact, the Civil Defense has distributed 152 water purifier kits to 24 municipalities and 33,000 food baskets, totaling 759 tons of humanitarian aid. Health authorities are urging citizens, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, to stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure to prevent heatstroke.
