Amazonas Governor inaugurates support space for indigenous women in Manaus
Amazonas Governor Roberto Cidade has inaugurated a new 24-hour support facility for indigenous women at the Balbina Mestrinho Maternity Hospital in Manaus. Located within the unit's support house, the space is designed to accommodate up to 14 women simultaneously.
The facility aims to provide humanized care that respects the cultural traditions and customs of indigenous peoples. It includes amenities such as hammocks for resting and areas that allow women to prepare their own food, ensuring they can maintain their cultural practices while staying in the capital to monitor their children's medical progress.
Governor Cidade noted that many indigenous women travel from distant municipalities, such as Parintins, Tabatinga, and Maués, without family support. This new structure is the first of its kind provided by the state government to address the specific needs of maternal and child health for indigenous populations.
