Amazonas mayor's relative appointment to finance secretary probed

The Public Ministry of the State of Amazonas (MPAM) opened an investigation into the appointment of a relative of Eirunepé mayor Áurea Maria Ester Alves Marques to the municipal Finance Secretary position. The investigation, ordered by prosecutor Cláudio Moisés Rodrigues Pereira on 8 July 2026 and published on 4 August, will examine whether the appointment violates legal principles of legality, impersonality, morality and efficiency, and whether it breaches the Supreme Federal Court’s binding precedent No. 13, which generally prohibits the hiring of relatives up to the third degree for trust and commissioned public roles. The procedural file (Preparatory Procedure No. 001/2025‑000370) currently focuses solely on the legality of the nomination. If sufficient evidence is gathered, the case may be escalated to a civil inquiry for possible judicial measures.
