Amazonas Public Defender Issues Guide on Protecting Children’s Data
To mark the 36th anniversary of Brazil’s Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) in July, the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Amazonas released a free booklet titled “Proteção de Dados de Crianças e Adolescentes: O que você precisa saber.” The guide explains how personal data of minors must be handled under the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), emphasizing that processing must serve the child’s best interests, require clear parental or guardian consent, and be limited to protective or legal purposes.
The material, prepared by the office’s Data Protection Unit and overseen by data officer Rudson Nunes, also outlines exceptions that allow the use of minors’ data without prior consent in cases of violence or other emergencies to ensure their safety. The booklet is accessible via the defender’s website for anyone seeking guidance on lawful data practices for children and adolescents.
