Amazonas Public Ministry monitors drought prevention in São Gabriel da Cachoeira
The Public Ministry of Amazonas (MPAM) has launched an administrative procedure to monitor and oversee public policies in São Gabriel da Cachoeira aimed at preventing and mitigating the effects of extreme climate events. The initiative, led by Prosecutor Paulo Alexander dos Santos Beriba, specifically targets the potential impacts of the 2026/2027 El Niño phenomenon and current drought conditions.
The decision follows severe emergencies in 2023 and 2024, where low river levels disrupted water supplies, fluvial transport, electricity, and access to essential services. Given the region's geography, many rural, riverside, and indigenous communities rely heavily on rivers for movement and basic needs. MPAM has requested information from the State Secretariats of Health and Environment, as well as the Amazonas Civil Defense, to ensure rigorous oversight of local mitigation efforts.
