Amazonia Legal: Demographics linked to climate voting patterns
An analysis by InfoAmazonia, which cross-referenced 2022 electoral data with demographic information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), reveals a correlation between demographic composition and climate-related voting patterns in the Legal Amazon.
The study indicates that electoral zones with higher proportions of white residents or evangelical Christians tend to concentrate more votes on candidates and parties that hold positions less favorable to the climate agenda. In the five electoral zones with the lowest climate alignment scores, the white population consistently exceeded 22%, whereas in the five zones with the highest scores, the percentage did not exceed 10%.
Regarding religious demographics, the analysis found that in all states within the Legal Amazon, a higher proportion of evangelicals in an electoral zone correlates with a lower likelihood of that area producing pro-climate results. The states of Rondônia and Acre were identified as central points in this trend, containing some of the highest proportions of evangelical voters in the region.
