Amazonian Film Projects Spotlight Inclusion and Regional Narratives

On June 11, the Teatro Gebes Medeiros in Manaus hosted the Vozes Visuais showcase, presenting six short films created by blind and low‑vision students who completed an accessible audiovisual workshop. The project, led by cultural producer and psychologist Keylla Gomes, taught participants scriptwriting, filming and editing, resulting in works built from everyday sounds, voices and silence. Gomes said the initiative "puts blind and low‑vision people as protagonists, as cultural producers and agents," and participants described it as opening new horizons for visual‑impairment artists.

Meanwhile, the documentary “Anamã, a Veneza da Amazônia,” directed by journalist Orlando Júnior of La Xunga Produções, was named a finalist in the national documentary category of the inaugural FestCine Saberes Amazônicos in Boa Vista, Roraima. The 20‑minute film, shot during the 2021 Solimões flood, depicts life in the flood‑prone town of Anamã and aims to amplify Amazonian perspectives. Júnior called the selection "an important opportunity to broaden the circulation of audiovisual production from the North."

Both events underline growing recognition of regional storytelling and inclusive cultural production in Brazil’s Amazon region.
