Amazonian indigenous groups convene in Ecuador to oppose extractivism

Indigenous peoples and social organizations from across the Amazon basin have gathered in Puyo, Ecuador, for the XII Pan-Amazonian Social Forum (FOSPA). The assembly aims to establish an action plan to advance toward territories free from extractivism, specifically targeting the expansion of oil and mining activities in the region.

Participants expressed concerns regarding authoritarian governments that prioritize resource exploitation over environmental protection. The forum serves as a platform for representatives from nine Amazonian countries to exchange knowledge and coordinate resistance against large-scale corporate extraction.

A central component of this year's forum is the 'Resistance of Women and Diversities' thematic house. Organized in alliance with the Flora Tristán Peruvian Women's Center and the Women and Climate Change Driving Group (GIMCC), this section addresses the criminalization of female defenders, socio-environmental justice, and the impact of conservative political trends on women's rights and territorial autonomy.
