Amazonian sustainability initiatives advance in Colombia and Peru

In Colombia, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, through the REM Visión Amazonía program and in partnership with the Institución Universitaria del Putumayo, has graduated 30 forest workers in Sustainable Forest Management. The training, part of the ‘Escuela de Selva’ environmental education strategy, took place in Calamar and involved theoretical and practical sessions in Mocoa and Guaviare. The program aims to strengthen local capacities for the sustainable use of Amazonian forests, integrating academic knowledge with traditional territorial expertise.

In Peru, eight aquaculture graduates from the National University of the Peruvian Amazon (UNAP) are conducting research in Datem del Marañón to address local ecosystem challenges. Supported by the ‘Development of the Ichthyological Value Chain’ project, funded by the Peru–Ecuador Binational Border Region Development Plan and executed by Terra Nuova, the researchers are studying water quality, fish reproduction, and species diversity. Their work focuses on the Morona River basin and the Shoroya cochas system to promote the sustainable use of hydrobiological resources in the Amazonian region.
