Ambaji temple's Mohanthal prasad receives GI tag

The traditional Mohanthal prasad offered at the Ambaji temple in Gujarat has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The recognition provides legal protection for the name and helps preserve the traditional identity and preparation methods of the sweet.

Made from gram flour, sugar, and ghee, Mohanthal is a signature offering at the Ambaji temple, a prominent Shaktipeeth in the Banaskantha district that attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees annually. The official certificate was presented to the Shree Arasuri Ambaji Mata Devasthan Trust during a ceremony held on the first day of the Sharadiya Navratri festival.

Prof. Dr. Unnat Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, noted that the GI tag ensures devotees receive authentic Mohanthal and protects against unauthorized use or duplication. The recognition places Mohanthal alongside other famous Indian religious offerings, such as Tirupati Laddu and Palani Panchamirtham, that have received similar status.
