Ambar Energia invests R$65 M in biometano and eyes R$12 B Candiota coal contract

Ambar Energia, the energy unit of the J&F Group, announced a R$65 million investment to expand biometano production from biogas captured at Friboi slaughterhouses. The project will start at three sites – Campo Grande II in Mato Grosso do Sul, and Andradina and Lins in São Paulo – and aims to add more than 14 million cubic metres of biometano per year, a renewable fuel that meets ANP standards for use in vehicles and industrial equipment.

The Lula administration has opened a public consultation to contract electricity from the Candiota coal‑fired power plant, also owned by Ambar Energia. The proposal calls for a 15‑year contract extending operation until 2040, with total costs projected to exceed R$12 billion (about R$859.7 million per year) and a tariff of R$540.27 per MWh, roughly 50 % above recent auction averages. The move follows a congressional amendment allowing continued coal generation in Brazil's power mix.
