Ambato Hospital corruption investigation expands in Ecuador

Authorities in Ecuador have launched 'Operación Código Blanco' to investigate a suspected corruption network at the Ambato General Docente Hospital. The operation, led by the State Attorney General's Office and the National Police, involved raids at the hospital and two private residences on October 23, 2026.

Preliminary investigations suggest a scheme where applicants were allegedly required to pay between USD 3,000 and USD 7,000 to secure contracts and appointments, bypassing mandatory public merit competitions.

Public Health Minister Juan Carlos Aveiga visited the facility to ensure medical services remained operational during the investigation. He confirmed that substantial evidence was gathered from administrative offices, including those of the manager and Human Resources, and warned that more individuals may be implicated as the probe continues.
