Amber Guyger granted parole after serving seven years for murder

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has granted parole to Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer. Guyger is serving a 10-year prison sentence for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean, an unarmed Black man who was shot while in his own apartment.

Guyger has served seven years of her sentence at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville. The parole board cited her satisfactory institutional adjustment, the lack of a documented pattern of violence, and her completion of a treatment plan designed to assist with future employment as reasons for the decision.

The ruling has drawn strong opposition from Jean’s family and civil rights advocates. Lee Merritt, the attorney representing the Jean family, expressed deep disappointment, stating that the early release makes the loss feel even smaller to the community and the justice system.
