Amber Guyger released from prison on parole after serving seven years
Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer, was released from a Texas prison on parole on Friday after serving seven years of a 10-year murder sentence. Guyger was convicted in 2019 for the fatal shooting of her neighbor, Botham Jean, in September 2018. The incident occurred when Guyger mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, believing she had returned to her own home.
Guyger will remain under strict parole supervision until her sentence expires in 2029. Her conditions include regular check-ins, travel restrictions, and home visits. She is prohibited from living in Dallas County, contacting the Jean family or Dallas police officers, or leaving the state of Texas without prior approval.
The release has drawn criticism from the Jean family. Their attorney, Lee Merritt, stated that the family opposed the early release, expressing frustration that the sentence felt insufficient. Guyger’s legal team noted that she has secured housing and employment and remains remorseful for the shooting.
