DLR unveils ALISA modular night train concept

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has introduced a new concept for future night trains called ‘ALISA’ at the InnoTrans trade fair. The design aims to improve economic efficiency and passenger comfort through a modular, double-decker structure.

The concept features 46-meter units consisting of three interconnected double-decker cars. A specialized single-wheel chassis allows both levels to be accessible throughout the entire unit. To increase flexibility, the modular interior includes folding beds that allow sleeping compartments to be converted into seating areas during the day, enabling the trains to be used for regular daytime service.

According to DLR calculations, this design could increase passenger capacity by 40 percent compared to current models like the ÖBB Nightjet while maintaining the same axle load. The project utilizes lightweight materials, including aluminum and sandwich structures, to manage weight. Currently, the ALISA project remains a research and vehicle concept.
