AmCham Italy proposes Milan as a UN hub for AI governance
The American Chamber of Commerce in Italy (AmCham) has called for the establishment of a permanent, multilateral forum to address artificial intelligence governance. To facilitate this, AmCham is proposing that Milan serve as the headquarters for a United Nations pillar dedicated specifically to AI governance.
This proposal aligns with the Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies recently adopted by G20 Innovation Ministers. Simone Crolla, Managing Director of AmCham Italy, emphasized that the current divergence in regulatory visions necessitates a stable environment where governments, businesses, and the scientific community can engage in cooperation. The goal is to provide a framework that allows global industry to operate under clear rules and state coordination while protecting fundamental rights, without creating unnecessary supranational bureaucracy.
Industry leaders note that while AI presents significant opportunities for competitiveness and efficiency, it also poses ethical and civil responsibilities. Businesses face the urgent need to invest in new skills and technologies to remain competitive, even as the rapid pace of innovation outstrips current political and regulatory frameworks.
