AMD signs definitive agreement to acquire AI inference chip startup Taalas
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Toronto‑based AI inference chip startup Taalas. The deal, disclosed on August 6 2026, is for an undisclosed amount and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
Taalas, founded in 2023, builds chips that hard‑wire AI model weights directly into silicon, eliminating the memory‑compute bottleneck of conventional GPUs. Senior Vice President of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group Vamsi Boppana said the acquisition “strengthens AMD’s AI portfolio by delivering differentiated inference performance and efficiency.” Taalas co‑founder and CEO Ljubisa Bajic noted that joining AMD will provide the scale and engineering resources needed to accelerate the technology.
