AMD advances Linux GPU driver with DCN 6 and HDMI 2.1 support
AMD is preparing its next‑generation RDNA 5 graphics architecture by integrating the new Display Core Next 6 (DCN 6) display engine into the Linux kernel. The driver changes link DCN 6 with the GFX13 identifier, laying groundwork for future Radeon GPUs before any hardware is released.
A recent AMDGPU driver update also brings full HDMI 2.1 support to Linux, adding Auto Low‑Latency Mode (ALLM), HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Display Stream Compression (DSC). These features enable low‑latency gaming modes and high‑refresh‑rate video output such as 240 Hz at 4K or 120 Hz at 8K. The patches are slated for inclusion in the upcoming Linux 7.3 kernel, with full functionality expected in Linux 7.4.
