AMD develops AI-focused rack system and competes in high-end CPU market
AMD is developing a new rack-scale computing system called the Helion Agentic AI Rack, designed to support artificial intelligence workloads across personal, enterprise, and technical computing categories. The proposed configuration can include up to 32,768 Zen 6 x86 CPU cores and 16 Instinct MI350P accelerators, delivering 74 petaflops of FP4 computing performance and 102 Tbps of networking bandwidth.
To accommodate different needs, AMD offers modular hardware. Personal agent workloads focus on energy efficiency using 256-core Venice processors at 400W. Enterprise applications utilize 256-core Venice processors at 600W, balancing capacity and performance, while technical computing relies on 96-core, high-frequency Venice processors to prioritize speed.
In the consumer desktop market, technical comparisons between high-end processors show the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X featuring 12 cores and 24 threads at 120W TDP, compared to the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, which offers 24 cores (8 Performance-cores and 16 Efficient-cores) with a 125W base power and a maximum turbo of 250W.
