Qualcomm and Amazon partner on AI chips; AMD unveils Threadripper Halo Station
Qualcomm and Amazon have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to develop custom silicon for Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers. The collaboration focuses on designing AI inference chips and high-speed optical connectivity solutions capable of reaching 1.6 terabits per second. As part of the deal, Qualcomm will issue Amazon warrants for approximately $4 billion in stock, which vest based on commercial milestones, including potential purchases of up to $60 billion in Qualcomm server technology.
Separately, AMD has unveiled a prototype for its Threadripper Halo Station at IFA 2026. Designed as a personal supercomputer for local AI workloads, the workstation features a 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX CPU and can be configured with up to four AMD Instinct MI350P accelerators. This configuration provides up to 576GB of HBM3e memory and a total system memory capacity of up to 2.6 TB, enabling the local execution of AI models with over one trillion parameters.
