AMD FSR 4.1 closes quality gap with NVIDIA DLSS in Cyberpunk 2077

Recent updates to Cyberpunk 2077 have introduced support for both NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5 and AMD's FSR 4.1, highlighting a significant narrowing of the performance and quality gap between the two upscaling technologies.

While NVIDIA's DLSS has historically maintained a lead in image fidelity—particularly regarding fine details like skin pores, facial hair, and ray tracing performance—new tests indicate that AMD's FSR 4.1 is now nearly comparable in image quality. Both technologies are capable of accurately rendering fine details such as clothing seams and small environmental elements. However, NVIDIA still holds an advantage in depth details and overall sharpness, as AMD's implementation tends to apply more smoothing to the final image.

In a separate development regarding neural rendering efficiency, a modder named maximedgoulet has released FoveatedDLSS5, an open-source add-on for ReShade. This tool implements foveated rendering principles for traditional 2D monitors by maintaining full resolution at the center of the screen while reducing resolution toward the edges. This approach aims to mitigate the high computational costs of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 by processing a smaller grid of pixels through the neural network before reconstructing the output to the original display resolution.
