AMD gains market share in client and server CPU sectors

AMD is experiencing significant growth across both the client and server processor markets, challenging Intel’s long-standing dominance. According to Mercury Research, AMD’s x86 client processor market share—covering desktops and laptops—surpassed 30% for the first time, reaching 30.3% in the second quarter. This represents a 6.4 percentage point increase compared to the previous year.

In the server sector, analysts from Raymond James have upgraded AMD to a “strong buy,” citing its potential to capture a larger share of the growing server CPU market. The total addressable market for server CPUs is projected to reach approximately $201 billion by 2030, driven largely by demand for AI-related workloads. Analysts suggest AMD possesses a strong competitive advantage in converting revenue growth into profit due to its data center positioning.

While AMD is gaining ground in the x86 market, it faces increasing competition from Arm-based architectures, such as those from Qualcomm and Apple, which already hold a significant portion of the broader PC market. Additionally, Nvidia is entering the space with its Vera CPU to support AI deployment.
