AMD GPUs receive improved Linux driver support via Valve developer
Timur Kristóf, an open-source graphics developer working for Valve, has implemented significant improvements to the Linux ‘amdgpu’ kernel driver to enhance support for decade-old AMD graphics cards. During a presentation at XDC 2026, Kristóf detailed how his work addresses long-standing gaps in the GCN 1.0 and 1.1 era hardware, specifically regarding display output, video encoding and decoding, power management, and crash recovery.
The updates facilitate a transition from the legacy Radeon driver to the modern ‘amdgpu’ driver. This shift enables the use of the RADV Vulkan driver and provides better overall performance and functionality for aging hardware. Kristóf noted that these improvements help extend the lifecycle of older GPUs, which can be useful for gaming, educational purposes, and reducing e-waste in a challenging economy.
By addressing defects in display code and implementing features like soft reset support, the work aims to make older AMD hardware more viable for Linux-based gaming and everyday computing tasks in 2026 and beyond.
