AMD Helios AI System Powers Microsoft Azure and Anthropic Partnership
AMD unveiled its Helios rack‑scale AI platform, combining Instinct MI455X GPUs, 6th‑gen EPYC "Venice" CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software. Microsoft will integrate Helios into Azure, adding three new VM families and beginning shipments in the second half of 2026.
Anthropic announced a strategic deal with AMD that includes up to $5 billion in investment and the deployment of up to 2 GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs within Helios racks. The first gigawatt is slated for early 2027, with the full capacity expected by 2028. Anthropic will use the platform to run its Claude models, while AMD will provide engineering support and co‑development of ROCm optimizations.
AMD expects AI‑focused data‑center revenue to reach tens of billions of dollars, citing customers such as OpenAI, Meta, Oracle and Microsoft. The Helios system is positioned as a direct challenger to Nvidia’s AI offerings, aiming to capture a significant share of the high‑performance AI inference market.
