AMD marks 20‑year anniversary of its $5.4 bn ATI acquisition

On July 24 2006 AMD announced a $5.4 billion purchase of Canadian graphics‑chipmaker ATI Technologies, completing the deal on October 25 that year. The acquisition shifted AMD from a pure CPU supplier to a full‑stack computing company, adding the Radeon GPU brand, ATI’s engineering talent and technology for graphics, console chips and later integrated CPU‑GPU processors (APUs).

The synergy enabled AMD to compete in the gaming GPU market, supply graphics for Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and later consoles, and lay the groundwork for its Instinct AI accelerator line aimed at data‑center workloads. AMD’s market value has grown to roughly $850 billion, about 48 times the price paid for ATI, underscoring the long‑term impact of the deal. The ATI name was phased out by 2010, but its technology continues to underpin all Radeon products today.
