AMD predicts PC resurgence driven by rising AI cloud costs
AMD predicts a resurgence in the importance of personal computers (PCs) driven by the rising costs of cloud-based artificial intelligence. As companies transition from simple chatbots to complex AI agents—which can analyze documents, search databases, and execute multi-step tasks—the demand for AI tokens is expected to grow 24-fold by 2030.
This growth creates a “token trap” where the cumulative cost of cloud-based operations for thousands of employees could become unsustainable. To mitigate these expenses, AMD proposes a hybrid approach: performing simple, repetitive tasks locally on the user's device while reserving powerful cloud systems for the most demanding queries. In a recent demonstration, this method allowed 69% of tokens to be processed locally, reducing costs and improving data privacy.
