AMD prepares Linux driver support for RDNA 4m Medusa Point APUs
AMD is preparing for the release of its upcoming Medusa Point APUs by adding support for the GFX1171 architecture identifier to the Mesa 26.3 open-source Linux graphics drivers. This update includes support for Vulkan RADV and OpenGL RadeonSI drivers.
The GFX1171 identifier belongs to the RDNA 4m architecture family. While specific retail branding remains unconfirmed, the hardware is linked to future Zen 6-based Medusa Point chips, which are expected to succeed the Strix Point processor family. These APUs combine central processing and graphical execution on a single die, making them suitable for laptops and handheld gaming devices.
Development efforts have also surfaced the GFX1170 and GFX1172 identifiers within the AMDGPU compiler work. Current driver code suggests these identifiers represent different hardware variants within the same architecture rather than introducing new functional features. Previous research into this family has noted extensions related to matrix calculations and AI algorithm acceleration.
