AMD Radeon GPUs receive experimental DLSS 4.5 support via d4r mod
A community-driven project named ‘d4r’ (DLSS for Radeon) has introduced experimental support for NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 and 4.5 upscaling technologies on AMD Radeon graphics cards. While DLSS is traditionally exclusive to NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs, this mod allows for its use on AMD hardware, specifically targeting Linux and Proton environments for DirectX 12 games.
The update includes support for AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, such as the RX 9000 series. A key technical advantage for RDNA 4 is its ability to natively handle FP8 calculations used by recent DLSS versions, avoiding the need to convert them to FP16.
Currently, the project is highly experimental. Testing has been confirmed on the Radeon RX 7700 XT, showing performance levels slightly below AMD’s FSR 4 in certain scenarios. At this stage, the mod only supports DLSS Super Resolution upscaling; features like frame generation and Ray Reconstruction are not yet included. The developer notes that the tool is intended as a demonstration of feasibility rather than a direct replacement for AMD FSR.
