AMD reaches 30% share of x86 client CPU market

AMD has surpassed a 30% share of the x86 client CPU market, encompassing both desktop and mobile processors, according to data from Mercury Research. In the second quarter, AMD reached a 30.3% market share, compared to Intel’s 69.7%. This marks a significant increase from two years ago when AMD held a 21.1% share.

Specifically, AMD’s desktop CPU shipment share stood at 34.9% in Q2, while its mobile processor share reached 28.9%. The growth in mobile shipments has been a key driver in pushing the total client CPU volume upward.

Despite AMD’s progress, the broader processor market faces competition from Arm-based chips produced by Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek. Additionally, the desktop x86 market has seen a significant decline, with shipments dropping by more than 20% year-over-year. Mercury Research attributed this downturn partly to an ongoing memory crunch that has increased prices for RAM, storage, and high-end graphics cards.
