AMD to rebuild GPU software stack using Rust

AMD has formed an internal elite team to rebuild its entire GPU software stack using the Rust programming language. This initiative aims to address structural challenges regarding memory safety and concurrency, reducing the frequency of system errors and game crashes.

The company is moving away from long-standing C and C++ codebases, which are prone to vulnerabilities in memory management. By implementing Rust, AMD intends to use the language's inherent safety guarantees to eliminate errors such as invalid memory access at the language level.

According to reports from Phoronix, the project is comprehensive, reaching deep into the core of the stack. This includes compilers, runtime environments, low-level firmware, system interfaces, and the co-design of hardware and software. The transition begins with the ROCm ecosystem, which AMD provides for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications.
