Amedspor's rise to Süper Lig viewed as symbol of peace in Turkey

The New York Times has published an analysis regarding Amedspor, the Diyarbakır-based football club that recently achieved promotion to the Turkish Süper Lig for the first time in its history. The report suggests that the club’s rise represents more than just sporting success, serving as a symbol of potential normalization and peace processes between the Turkish state and the Kurdish community.

According to data from the Kurdish Studies Center (KSC), Amedspor’s fanbase has grown fourfold over the last four years, reaching approximately 4 million people. The analysis notes that over 75% of those surveyed view the club as more than just a football team, seeing it as a vehicle for cultural representation and social identity.

The report also highlights a significant shift in political dynamics, noting a photograph of Amedspor President Nahit Eren wearing the club’s jersey while meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex—an occurrence described as previously ‘unimaginable.’ Despite its growth, the club has historically faced legal and disciplinary challenges related to its identity and the use of Kurdish slogans on its kits.
