The Ameland municipal council has officially recommended Stefan van Keijzerswaard as the new mayor of the Wadden island. The announcement was made during a public council meeting in Ballum on Monday, August 31.

Van Keijzerswaard, 46, currently serves as an alderman for the municipality of Vlieland and previously held a similar role in 't Hogeland. He brings extensive regional experience, serving as the chairman of the Association of Wadden Sea Municipalities and holding memberships in the Wadden Sea Board and the Administrative Consultation Wadden.

The selection followed a recruitment process that began earlier this year, which included a profile assessment involving input from Ameland residents. Sixteen candidates applied for the position. Van Keijzerswaard is set to succeed acting mayor Tytsy Willemsma, who has been in the role since September 2025. The vacancy was created after former mayor Leo Pieter Stoel was appointed to De Fryske Marren.

The recommendation will now proceed to the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations for final processing. If the appointment follows the planned schedule, Van Keijzerswaard will be installed as mayor on November 2, 2026.
