Amelia Earhart plane search expedition finds no wreckage

A $900,000 expedition to the Nikumaroro atoll in Kiribati has concluded without finding evidence of Amelia Earhart’s missing Lockheed Electra 10-E. The mission, funded by Purdue University and private donors, aimed to investigate a Y-shaped object detected in 2020 satellite imagery within the island's lagoon.

After a week of on-site investigation, researchers determined that the visual anomaly was not aircraft wreckage, but rather a collection of large, decaying trees and plant debris wedged in the sand. The reflective surface that previously suggested the presence of metal was identified as a carbonate veneer covering the organic material.

While the team failed to find the “smoking gun” required to confirm hypotheses regarding Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan’s disappearance in 1937, expedition leaders noted the value of the search effort. The findings do not entirely dismiss existing theories regarding the possibility of the aviators surviving as castaways on the island.
