Amelia Earhart search expedition targets Nikumaroro atoll

A 17-person scientific expedition is launching to the Nikumaroro atoll in Kiribati to search for the remains of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E. The aviator disappeared on July 2, 1937, during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

The mission, led by Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute, focuses on investigating the ‘Taraia Object.’ This visual anomaly, measuring approximately ten meters in length, was first visible on satellite imagery following a 2015 storm and is located in the island's shallow lagoon.

DHL is acting as the Official Logistics Partner, transporting approximately 748 kg of specialized equipment—including underwater drones, side-scan sonar, magnetometers, and GPS systems—from the United States to Kiribati to support the search.
