Amelia Kirk sentenced for violent offences following partner's overdose

Amelia Kirk, 22, appeared via video link from Clarence Correctional Centre at Armidale Local Court to be sentenced for several offences, including affray, armed with intent, hindering police, and multiple AVO breaches.

Her solicitor, Nick Forrest, informed Judge Mark Richardson that Kirk's criminal behavior emerged in 2019 following the death of her partner from a suspected drug overdose. Kirk had been using methamphetamine during her time living with her partner in Armidale. The charges stem from an altercation earlier this year where Kirk was found guilty of producing a weapon that caused injuries to a co-offender.

Kirk's mother remains supportive but has stated she will not allow Kirk to return home until her drug addiction is addressed. Kirk, who has been in custody since July 22, expressed fear for her safety while sharing cells at the correctional centre.
