Amen Thompson signs $208 million extension with Houston Rockets

Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets. The 23-year-old guard is viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise's future following a season in which he led the league in total minutes played and finished in the top 10 for Defensive Player of the Year voting.

NBA veteran Kevin Durant expressed strong support for the decision on social media, stating, “I don't want to hear any criticism: this year, we are all in on my guy.” Durant, who has a close professional relationship with Thompson, noted that his own financial flexibility upon joining Houston was intended to help the team secure key young talents like Thompson.

While some analysts have questioned the scale of the deal due to Thompson's 21.6% three-point shooting accuracy, four-time All-Star Draymond Green defended the extension. Green argued that Thompson possesses the demeanor to become a franchise star, emphasizing that while shooting is a skill to be developed, his athletic profile is unique. Thompson joins teammate Alperen Sengun, who previously signed a five-year, $185 million extension, as a central figure in the Rockets' long-term plans.
