American Academy of Neurology issues updated migraine prevention guidelines
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Headache Society (AHS) have released updated clinical practice guidelines for the prevention of migraine in adults. This marks the first major update to these recommendations since 2012.
The new guidelines incorporate recent medical advancements, specifically highlighting medications that target the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) pathway. These newer treatments, which include options like Aimovig, Ajovy, and Qulipta, offer alternatives to traditional preventive methods such as beta-blockers and antiseizure medications.
Clinicians are advised to offer preventive treatment to patients who experience four or more migraine days per month, four or more moderate to severe headache days per month, or those whose symptoms significantly impair their ability to work or perform daily tasks. The guidelines also provide definitions for chronic migraine, characterized by 15 or more headache days per month for at least three months.
