American Airlines aircraft avoid danger due to duplicate callsigns

An air traffic controller prevented a potentially dangerous situation involving two American Airlines aircraft operating with the same callsign, American 2482. The incident occurred when one aircraft was arriving from Chicago while another was departing from Phoenix.

To resolve the confusion, the controller differentiated the flights by referring to them as “American 2482 on the arrival” and “American 2482 on the departure.” The controller maintained safe separation by keeping the arriving aircraft at a higher altitude and instructing the departing crew not to climb. The controller, a 25-year veteran, noted that he had never encountered two aircraft with nearly identical callsigns operating in the same area simultaneously.

Experts suggest the error stemmed from operational planning. Due to weather delays in Chicago, American Airlines deployed a second aircraft in Phoenix to maintain the schedule, resulting in two different planes using the same flight number in the same airspace.
