American and United Airlines announce major international route expansions

Major airlines are announcing significant international network expansions scheduled for 2026 and 2027.

American Airlines will launch seven new international routes, including its first-ever service to Vienna and Porto from Philadelphia. Other new destinations include Reykjavik from Philadelphia, Amsterdam and Nice from New York, and Barcelona from Charlotte. The airline will also increase flight frequency between New York and London and add a route from Chicago to Tokyo Narita.

United Airlines is planning its largest international expansion, adding 10 new destinations across Europe and Asia for 2027. These include routes from San Francisco to Okinawa, and several new connections from Newark to cities such as Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, and Ljubljana. United also plans to restart service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv.

In South Africa, Cape Town is seeing an increase in international connectivity. Air France is resuming seasonal direct service between Paris and Cape Town, while other carriers like KLM, Swiss, and Norse Atlantic are increasing frequencies or introducing new routes to the region.
