American Airlines announces senior management reorganization

American Airlines has announced a significant reorganization of its senior management team. CEO Robert Isom described the move as a response to a “meaningful gap” between the airline’s current performance and its potential, aiming to improve customer experience, operational reliability, and business results.

The restructuring includes several key leadership changes. Former Spirit Airlines COO John Bendoraitis will join the company to lead technical operations. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper will expand her responsibilities to include marketing, branding, advertising, and partnerships. Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden will now oversee reservations, contact centers, service recovery, and catering. Additionally, JC Gulbranson will take on responsibility for airports and planning, while Caroline Clayton will manage communications and Steve Neuman will oversee government affairs and sustainability.

These changes come as American Airlines faces pressure to close a profit gap with major competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The company currently expects to reach roughly break-even results by 2026, a projection impacted by rising jet fuel prices.
